Who can apply?
The Symposium welcomes postgraduate students and early-career researchers whose research focuses on maritime archaeology of the eastern Mediterranean. Likewise, maritime archaeologists from the eastern Mediterranean region are welcome to present their work, including research conducted beyond the region.
Eligibility
• Early-career researchers, including recent PhD graduates and postdoctoral researchers
• Postgraduate students, including master’s and doctoral candidates
Application Deadline
Applications for both abstracts and bursaries are open from June 18 to September 10, 2026.
Themes
The Symposium welcomes papers addressing maritime archaeology in the eastern Mediterranean, as well as research undertaken by maritime archaeologists from the region. The overarching theme is recent developments and discoveries in eastern Mediterranean archaeology, but contributions may engage with, but are not limited to, the following themes:
- Nautical and Harbour Archaeology
- Maritime Networks and Social Interactions
- Maritime Cultural Landscapes and Seafaring Communities
- Geoarchaeology and Palaeoenvironments
- Sustainability and Historic Ships
- Ship Science and Engineering of Ancient Boats/Harbours
- Maritime History, Ethnography, and Art
- Museum Studies and Public Engagement
Participants are encouraged to present their work that employs innovative methodologies, interdisciplinary approaches, and new perspectives for the investigation, management, preservation, and communication of maritime and underwater cultural heritage.

Bursary Information
The Foundation is pleased to offer scholars the opportunity to attend the Maritime Archaeology Graduate Symposium (MAGS) at the University of Aix-Marseille.
The Foundation is offering the opportunity for researchers from the eastern Mediterranean region (Cyprus, Lebanon, Syria, and Egypt) to apply for support in the form of bursaries to present at MAGS 2027.
This call is open only to early-career researchers (current post-graduates or graduates who have completed in the previous 2 years) who have had a paper or poster accepted at MAGS 2027.
