Mehmetcan Soyluoglu (PhD Candidate, The Cyprus Institute), Massimiliano Secci (Special Scientist (Research), University of Cyprus), Georgia-Dimitra Kyriakou (Special Scientist (Research), University of Cyprus), Irene Katsouri (Special Scientist (Research), University of Cyprus).

Sponsored by the Honor Frost Foundation (HFF) and organized by early career researchers of the University of Cyprus and the Cyprus Institute, the 5th MAGS invited the next generation of maritime archaeology scholars to gather on the island of Cyprus. The Symposium took place over two days (2-3 March 2023) at the premises of the University of Cyprus in Nicosia. In addition to paper sessions, MAGS 2023 included various related academic and social events.

MAGS 2023 successfully provided a platform where young scholars from various countries and institutions, often for the first time, experienced a professional academic setting in a friendly environment modeled after international conferences.

The symposium fostered vibrant and dynamic discussions across various branches of the subdiscipline, adopting a comprehensive, interdisciplinary approach. While it primarily focused on research topics pertaining to the eastern Mediterranean, the inclusion of presentations from other regions enriched the dialogue, offering a broader perspective on global maritime research practices and methodologies.

The thematic areas of the symposium included ships, seafaring and trade in antiquity, material culture studies, harbour archaeology, maritime cultural landscapes, maritime heritage management and preservation, and public outreach and engagement. In total, there were thirty-one presentations, each contributing to a deeper understanding of the field and facilitating meaningful academic exchanges and collaborations.
